The town of Oshkosh has a rich and beautiful heritage dating back to 1634, when Jean Nicolet traveled to Fox River to make treaties with local tribes. Chief Oshkosh, set in the Menominee Nation, handed over the territory to the United States government in 1836, and shortly afterwards, the first non-native colonist, Webster Stanley of Ohio, emigrated from Ohio to begin shipping. In 1839 a meeting took place among the colonists and the settlement was named Oshkosh after the Honorary Chief Menominee.

In the early years, Oshkosh was known as the “city of sawdust” because it housed 24 sawmills, 15 shingles and 7 scissor and door companies that produced more than one million wooden feet of wood. per year, which corresponds to 15,000 trucks. Despite several fires that destroyed much of the city, Oshkosh continued to expand, and in 1866 Oshkosh was the second largest city in Wisconsin, after Milwaukee. As the milling industry began to decline, Oshkosh became known as “Oshkosh on Water” due to its unique location between Lake Winnebago and Lake Butte des Morts with the Fox River flowing into the city center. Oshkosh began in the early 1970s as a “city of events” and now hosts numerous events, including Country USA, Rock USA, Lifefest, EAA Air Show, Sawdust Days, Waterfest, The Otter Street Fishery, Gallery Walk to the Center, Farmers. Market and Winnebago County Fair.

Finding activities is not difficult! In addition to fishing, boating and skiing on lakes and rivers, you can go hiking, walking or cooling off on the 14+ mile Wiouwash Trail at Pollock Community Waterpark. Relax and golf on one of the many 18-hole and mini golf courses; shopping at the many shops and stores in the city center and along I-41. Stroll and play in one of the city’s 25 parks or visit the Oshkosh Public Library. Visit some of the local museums, such as Oshkosh Public Museum, Menominee Park Zoo, Military Veterans Museum, EAA Museum or the famous Paine Art Center and Gardens.

Oshkosh has a proud tradition of education. During the 5 years that Webster Stanley lived in the area, Oshkosh opened its first school and now houses 14 public elementary schools, 5 public high schools, 2 public high schools and several private and church schools. Oshkosh also offers additional tuition at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh with nearly 14,000 students and Fox Valley Technical College serves approximately 9,000 students annually throughout the Fox Valley area.
